Timeline

Our history

How the association has gathered scattered film and stage memories since it was founded.

  1. The association is founded

A group of film workers and Cantonese opera enthusiasts founded the Art Heritage Conservancy in Hong Kong and began collecting film, scripts, and stills that were about to be lost.

  2. First public screening

Restored shorts return to a community hall, so audiences can see works whose prints can no longer be found.

  3. Archive room opens

The first climate-controlled archive goes into use, giving costumes, posters, and home videos a permanent home.

  4. Conservation workshop

Workshops for students and volunteers begin, passing on cleaning, numbering, and preservation methods.

  5. Digitisation programme

Scanning of stills and negatives begins. Researchers can view them by appointment instead of handling the originals each time.

  6. Oral history

Retired lighting designers, musicians, and studio workers are interviewed, and their memories are written down.

  7. Community screening network

Restored works are taken to different districts in partnership with schools and community halls.

  8. The work continues

The archive is still growing. The association keeps cataloguing new scripts, posters, and recordings, and is preparing the next public screening.
